コミック、アニメ、映画など、今や世界的な大ブームとなっている『DEATH NOTE』。11月に公開された映画『DEATH NOTE the Last name』もロングヒットを続ける中、その映画へ贈る音楽界からのアンサーソングス『The songs for DEATH NOTE the movie〜the Last name TRIBUTE〜』が12月20日にリリースされる。

本作は、『DEATH NOTE』を愛するアーティストたちがインスパイアされて作った楽曲、あるいは、イメージに合った曲を提供した、映画トリビュート・アルバム。THE MAD CAPSULE MARKETSのKYONOとSlipknotのDJ STARSCREAMによる「HAKAI(Deathtroy)」、UVERworld「〜流れ・空虚・THIS WORD〜(D.N.version)」、abingdon boys school「Fre@K ＄HoW」など、多彩な顔ぶれによる楽曲が全14曲収録される。

そして本作のリリースにあたり、12月18日（月）0時〜12月19日（火）正午までの36時間限定で、Sony Music Online Japan（ http://www.sonymusic.co.jp/ ）をサイトジャック。「HAKAI(Deathtroy)」と「Girl」のクリップをフルコーラス公開するほか、映画館鑑賞券のプレゼントなどを実施している。

関連情報としては、日本テレビで毎週火曜（深夜24：56〜）に放送されているアニメ版『DEATH NOTE』は、オープニングとエンディング・テーマをナイトメアが手掛けており、それらの楽曲を収録した最新シングル「the WORLD／アルミナ」はオリコン初登場５位を獲得している。また、12月26日放送の第12話には、映画でLを演じている松山ケンイチが死神ジェラスの声でゲスト出演する。
